CEN64 is planning on being much better optimized than that though.Īnd sadly, N64 emulation isn't very good.

There has been a cycle-accurate N64 emulator attempted already (MESS's N64 emulation core) and it's so intensive that most computers can't run it at full speed. Sadly, this comes at the heavy cost of high computer specs.
It emulates on a very low level, meaning that 100% compatibility without any glitches/timing issues is much easier to achieve. Games that use modified microcode, though, are much harder to emulate because they behave significantly different than all of the other games published.īasically, cycle accuracy is what BSNES/Higan uses for its emulation. Their games ran much better and they could pull off things that other developers could not. Most developers did not touch the microcode but a handful did.

But the code Nintendo gave developers was badly optimized for most games and the microcode system was pretty much undocumented and very difficult to program for. You could reprogram those processors to do different thing. One of the big troubles with the system, and for emulation, was the "microcode" for the graphics and sound processors. (One of the reasons N64 games have lots of flat or very blurry/muddy textures) (It's complex and most of it's features are wasted/unused when it comes to games.) The system's architecture severely limits the size of textures. The processor was designed for high-end unix workstations. There are a lot of criticisms on the design of the system.
I've got a hunch some of this has to do with the nature of the N64 itself. It has a lot of potential, and I really hope that it's fully realized. If I recall correctly, its emulation of Pokemon Snap also doesn't have the infamous picture glitch that most emulators do. Its emulation of Kirby 64 doesn't have the UI glitches present in the other N64 emulators (It also runs perfectly when emulating the Virtual Console on Dolphin, but that doesn't count). This emulator, if it weren't for its current lack of sound emulation, would already have some achievements under its belt. The requirements are still going to be significantly higher than the high-level alternatives, but they won't be ludicrous. CEN64 is aiming for lower requirements while still maintaining high accuracy. But some people believe this is false, and that the belief comes from numerous cycle accuracy attempts being badly optimized. Many people believe a big con of cycle accuracy is that the system requirements are very high. The method, called cycle accuracy, allows for low-level emulation that makes 100% compatibility much more feasible than on a high-level emulation platform.
